The Groundfridge. A Simple Back To Basics Storage Idea For Keeping Things Cold...

Yes, an underground fridge or an underground cellar is an old idea and a very good idea.
A Back To Basics idea.
Before electricity, people would dig an underground storage area or room which surrounded by the earth would retain stable and cool temperatures year round.
You can easily build your own with a large plastic container or a garbage container, anything that can be securely closed against vermin or before you do, have a look here at this Groundfridge from Weltevree.
You might like their mission statement that speaks of wanting to contribute to a sustainable, social and inspiring environment.
And underground refrigerators really do symbolise the idea of sustainability...

  1. When I was a boy we had a "fruit cellar". It stayed nice and cool all year.

  2. It reminds me of a friend's garden air raid shelter used as an apple cool store.

  3. This would be a super tornado shelter. We have such extreme weather in various places now that you just never know when it would come in handy. In the meantime using it for its original purpose is good too.

  4. Gee--you could live in a much larger version of this and pay next to nothing for heating and cooling... :-)
